Eczema and Psoriasis
A Review of Relief Alternatives. Can You Ease Symptoms Naturally?

Eczema (also known as a topic dermatitis) and psoriasis are incurable, cruel skin conditions that afflict more than 15 million Americans and more than 3/4 billion poeple on the face of the earth . Eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis are conditions most scientists believe are related to the over reactive response by the body’s immune system. Some believe that there is a genetic connection. If a parent or other family members have eczema, hay fever, or asthma, there exists a 50% chance that a child will have one of these afflictions.

Symptoms of these conditions include dry, damaged skin that allows irritants such as pollen, dust, and dirt to enter the skins surface more easily. The skin affected by these conditions usually looks dry, red, and scaly.

Additionally, these areas are extremely itchy. Eczema can affect the whole body but is most commonly found in specific areas such as the hands, feet, elbows, and knees. In adults, eczema can also affect areas such as the eyelids, neck, and wrists. In children, the most common areas are the cheeks, chin, back, stomach, and arms.

More than just a skin condition.

An International study backed by the National Eczema Society and global patient support groups, has revealed that more than a quarter of patients with atopic eczema have been bullied or teased because of their skin condition. It is unfortunate that eczema patients face a lifetime of isolation, bullying, discrimination and underperformance at school and work. The psychological challenge faced by these patients is insurmountable. Controlling atopic eczema more effectively can make a radical improvement to a patient’s quality of life. Furthering the quality of life improvement are the options now available that eliminate the side effects and uncomfortable treatment options. It is unusual to be able to identify and eliminate a single agent causing the skin reaction and most of the time we have to settle for improving the condition rather than getting rid of it altogether.

Eczema is a troublesome condition and not just because of the irritation and sleep disturbance that can be caused by itchy skin. Treatments are time consuming and can be messy. And in more severe eczema, the need for applying relentlessly to avoid relapse is a reality. Unlike some medical conditions, we don’t have a pill to swallow that puts eczema in its place.

The following are some of the more common treatments at use for eczema:

Emollients, because of the nature of their fairly short-lived effects, have to be applied in plentiful amounts. This doesn’t help however because their effects are negated by washing. They can be used, however, as soap substitutes or as an addition to baths. Eczema sufferers should avoid bubble bath products, soaps and shower gels because they can cause skin sensitization and excessive dehydration of the skin. Emollients can be put on thickly overnight to reduce the amount of moisture your skin loses, although clothes will become greasy. Thinner creams and lotions rub in more easily but may need reapplication more often. Trial and error is usually the best way to find out what suits you most. The bottom line is that you will need large quantities of emollients from your doctor to keep your skin moisturized.

Steroid creams reduce skin inflammations and are still the mainstay approach of many practitioners. Exactly how much of what strength steroid is effective has to be worked out on an individual basis. Long-term, potent steroid cream use should be avoided when possible, and lower potency creams should be substituted as soon as the eczema calms down. This ‘step-up’ and ‘step-down’ approach to steroid creams has been the standard for long-term eczema treatment. The number one drawback and consumer complaint has been the side effects associated with any type of steroidal treatment.
